How We Score Pre Workouts: Our 9-Criteria Methodology

Every pre workout on this site is scored using the same objective, weighted formula. No gut feelings, no favoritism. Here is exactly how our scoring system works and why each criterion is weighted the way it is.

Our Weighted Scoring Formula

We evaluate every product across nine criteria. Each criterion is scored from 1 to 10, then multiplied by its weight to produce the overall score. The weights reflect what matters most to real lifters making a purchasing decision.

Why Ingredient Transparency Is Weighted Highest

At 18%, ingredient transparency carries the most weight in our formula. The reason is simple: you cannot make an informed decision about a supplement if you do not know what is in it. Proprietary blends hide ingredient doses behind a single combined weight, making it impossible to know if you are getting clinically effective amounts. We reward products that show every ingredient with its exact dose and penalize those that hide behind blend labels.

What Each Criterion Measures

Ingredient Transparency

Does the label show every ingredient with exact doses? Are there proprietary blends? We believe consumers deserve to know exactly what they are putting in their body, which is why this criterion carries the highest weight.

Energy

How strong, smooth, and sustained is the energy boost? We evaluate onset time, peak intensity, and duration across multiple workouts.

Value

Cost per serving relative to ingredient quality and dosing. A product can score well here even at a higher price if the formula justifies the cost.

Pump

Muscle fullness, vascularity, and overall pump quality during training. We assess key pump ingredients like L-Citrulline and glycerol at their clinical doses.

Focus

Mental clarity, mind-muscle connection, and cognitive sharpness during training. Driven by nootropic ingredients like Alpha GPC, L-Tyrosine, and Lion's Mane.

Taste

Overall flavor quality, sweetness balance, and aftertaste. Tested with the manufacturer's recommended water volume in a standard shaker.

Crash Risk

How you feel after the pre workout wears off. Lower crash risk means the energy tapers smoothly rather than dropping suddenly. Products with L-Theanine and moderate caffeine tend to score highest here.

Beginner Friendliness

How suitable is this product for someone new to pre workout? Factors include caffeine dose, ingredient intensity, potential side effects, and ease of dosing.

Mixability

How well the powder dissolves in water. We test with a shaker bottle and no blender ball, checking for clumps, grit, and residue.

How the Overall Score Is Calculated

The overall score is a weighted average of all nine individual scores. Each criterion score (1 to 10) is multiplied by its weight, and all weighted scores are summed to produce the final number. Because the weights add up to 1.0, the overall score is also on a 1 to 10 scale.

For example, if a product scores 9.0 for Ingredient Transparency (weight 0.18) and 8.0 for Energy (weight 0.15), those two criteria contribute (9.0 x 0.18) + (8.0 x 0.15) = 1.62 + 1.20 = 2.82 toward the overall score. The remaining seven criteria are calculated the same way and added together.

This approach ensures that products cannot achieve a high overall score by excelling in just one or two areas. A truly top-rated pre workout needs to perform well across the board, with particular strength in the higher-weighted criteria.
